How to Make an Advertisement Video to Promote Your Business

We are constantly bombarded with advertisements when we watch TV or scroll through social media. Some ads work better than others.

Think about the last time an ad affected you so much so that you bought the product it was selling. Chances are, it was probably a video ad.

How to Make an Advertisement Video

Video advertisements are essential to promoting your business in our current digital age. If you are still not convinced you need to invest time and money into a video advertising strategy, click here to learn more (there’s even a science to it!)

So, you may be wondering, where do you even start when creating an advertisement video?

Come up With Goals for Your Advertisement

Before diving into writing your script or shooting your video, you need to write up goals for your advertisement. Here are a few questions to get you started:

  • What are you trying to sell?
  • Are you trying to raise brand awareness?
  • What should your audience remember from your advertisement?

Once you come up with goals, your video marketing and advertisement will be more clear. If you don’t include a clear call to action, your audience will be confused about what you want them to do.

Who Is Your Audience?

Another factor you need to consider before writing or filming your video is your audience. Consider the following when determining your audience:

  • Who is your product or service for?
  • Will you be running your ad on television?
  • Or will you be running your ad on social media?

Whether your ad is on TV or on social media also determines your audience and the type of ad you should create. This will determine the aspect ratio and the run time. More so, your audience might defer between the two media platforms.

Create a Script and Shotlist

Now that you know your goals and your audience, it’s finally time to write a script and shot list.

Your script is important, don’t go into filming thinking you’ll just “wing it.” Your script should be well-thought-out and captivating.  Most importantly, it should be convincing enough so that your audience buys what you are selling.

The shot list is exactly what it sounds like: a list of the shots you want to get when filming. This includes your testimonials, different angles, and b-roll.

Film or Create Your Graphics

You’ve done the prep work, it’s time to create what you’ll eventually edit.

If you are filming, try to use a professional-grade film or DSLR camera. You can either rent one or borrow from someone you know if you don’t already own one.

When filming, use a tripod and shoot horizontal, unless you are specifically creating an ad for TikTok or IG TV (the aspect ratio is vertical for these platforms.)

If your video is more graphics-based, like big text or charts, now’s the time to create your assets so they are ready for editing.

Start Editing

Editing is where your video comes together. You can cut together your shots, add music and graphics, and even adjust the color and lighting. To edit, you will need an editing program like iMovie, Adobe Premiere Pro, or Final Cut Pro.

If video editing isn’t your forte, consider hiring a video production company.
